Power strips and surge protectors

Disney bans extension cords, power strips, multi-plugs and surge protectors. Carnival’s generally permitted list includes power strips, multi-outlet adapters and extension cords without surge protection, though they may be removed if deemed unsafe. Norwegian’s list doesn’t name them.

Irons and steamers

All three ban clothes irons. Carnival and Disney name garment steamers too, and Norwegian bans anything you bring that has a heating element. Disney’s ships have self-service laundry rooms with irons and ironing boards.

Alcohol

Carnival lets guests 21 or older bring one 750 ml bottle of wine or champagne each. Disney allows one unopened bottle of wine of up to 750 ml, or 6 beers of up to 12 ounces, in your carry-on, and removes alcohol packed in checked bags.

What happens to a banned item

Carnival removes and disposes of it without compensation. Norwegian confiscates it and won’t carry it. Disney confiscates it, and your luggage reaches your stateroom late in the evening of embarkation day.

Common questions

Can I bring a hair straightener on a cruise?

Carnival, Norwegian and Disney all allow a hair straightener. Norwegian asks you to use it with proper caution and may hold it until the last day of the cruise if security finds it a hazard.

Are drones allowed on a cruise?

Not on Norwegian or Disney, which ban them. Carnival has you declare a drone at boarding, holds it with security and checks it out only for use at approved non-private-destination ports.
