A suitcase’s size name isn’t its outside size. Travelpro’s 22 inch Maxlite 5 carry-on measures 23 x 14.5 x 9 in with its wheels and handles, and Samsonite UK names its cases in centimeters.

Size names and outside sizes
Travelpro prints two sizes for each bag: the case alone and the overall size with wheels and handles. Its 22 inch carry-on’s case is 21 x 14 x 9 in, and overall it’s 23 x 14.5 x 9 in, over the 22 x 14 x 9 in carry-on limit of American, Delta, United, Alaska, JetBlue, Allegiant, Hawaiian, Breeze and Avelo. Monos and Away give one outside size, wheels and handles included.
Samsonite UK sells its Upscape spinners as 55, 68, 75 and 81 cm. In inches those are about 21.7, 26.8, 29.5 and 31.9 in tall. Its pages don’t say whether the wheels are included.
Liters
Capacity is each maker’s own figure, and it isn’t the outside box: Away’s Carry-On is a 47.2 liter box outside and holds 41 L by Away’s count. To work out a bag’s box volume, use suitcase size in liters.
Checked bags over 62 linear inches
Every airline here but Allegiant sets a checked bag size of 62 linear inches, length + width + height. Travelpro Maxlite 5 Large Check-In Spinner (29 inch) adds up to 65 in and Samsonite Upscape Spinner expandable 81cm adds up to about 66.5 in. Travelpro says its 29 inch can still be checked on most airlines. Add your own bag’s sides with the linear inches calculator.
