Between the islands or to the mainland
Hawaiian checks bags for less on flights wholly within Hawaii, and its overweight and oversize fees are lower there too. The size and weight limits are the same: 62 in and 50 lb.
| Limit | |
|---|---|
| Standard bag | 62 in total, 50 lb |
| Overweight | Two fee bands: 51 to 70 lb and 71 to 100 lb |
| Oversize | 63 to 115 in |
Overweight and oversize fees are on top of the bag fee, and a bag that is both pays both.
Free bags for Hawaii residents and cardmembers
Members of Huaka‘i by Hawaiian, the program for Hawaii residents, check two bags free on Neighbor Island flights, and those bags can be a surfboard or a golf bag. The primary Hawaiian Airlines World Elite Mastercard cardmember gets 2 free checked bags between North America and Hawaii and between the islands. Free bag benefits don’t add together: you get the largest one.
Surfboards and other gear
Hawaiian waives the oversize fee for surfboards, paddleboards and boogie boards, along with golf clubs, bikes, fishing gear, skis and snowboards and other listed sports gear. One surfboard or paddleboard case of up to 50 pounds counts as one item, and overweight fees apply above that. A board can be up to 125 inches long on Alaska Airlines flights operated with 737 or Airbus planes.
