Economy Basic: one personal item
Economy Basic tickets bought on or after January 3, 2025 allow one personal item on board within Canada, to and from the U.S. (Hawaii and Puerto Rico included), and to and from Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean. Every other bag is checked before security, at a self-serve bag drop or a check-in counter.
Online and kiosk check-in on those fares asks for a credit card to pre-authorize gate handling fees, in case a carry-on bag turns up at the gate.
What Air Canada measures
The sizes are depth x width x height, wheels and handles included. Air Canada sets no carry-on weight limit, as long as you can put the bag in the overhead bin without help. It checks carry-on sizes with automated sizers before security, before boarding or both.
Checked bags
The checked bag size counts the wheels and handles too, measured at the bag’s greatest outside height, width and length. A bag over the size or weight can cost extra, and Air Canada’s baggage calculator shows which checked bags your own trip includes.
